It Doesn't Take Much Sugar for It to Wreak Havoc on Your Body

AlterNet - By Jill Richardson - Feb. 26 (Special Report) - Fructose, on the other hand, is only metabolized by your liver. The title of a 2004 study says it all: “Dietary fructose reduces circulating insulin and leptin, attenuates postprandial suppression of ghrelin, and increases triglycerides in women.” In other words, after you eat fructose, your body never gets the message, “You’ve eaten enough, now stop.” As for those increased triglycerides, well… another word for triglyceride is “fat.”

thebulletin.org - By Matt Smith, Katharine Mieszkowski - Feb. 25 (Investigative Report) - “It was proposed to remove the radium data from the risk assessment document. The group literally broke out into laughter at that and there was instantaneous agreement that they would do that and simply reference it and put the information in a separate document,” Taibi wrote. “It was stated then the document would not have to go to CDPH (California Department of Public Health).”

How Washington Is Playing Venezuela Like a Fiddle

readersupportednews.org - By Carl Gibson - Feb. 24 (News Analysis) - United States foreign policy can be summed up as hard power vs. soft power. An example of hard power is the US backing the unsuccessful 2002 military coup d’état against Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez, when businessman Pedro Carmona Estanga briefly took power. An example of the US’s soft power is the current situation in Venezuela. A leaked document from November of 2013 shows that the US Agency for International Development (USAID) collaborated with the Colombian government and Venezuelan opposition leaders to destabilize Venezuela and stoke massive protests.

Dark Money Groups to Get Clarity From the IRS; Outrage Ensues

billmoyers.com - By Joshua Holland - Feb. 23 (News Report) - Social welfare organizations are allowed to influence elections to a degree, but can’t make electoral politics their “primary focus.” The problem is that standard hasn’t been well defined. That lack of clarity was at the heart of the IRS’s Cincinnati field office using “inappropriate criteria” to examine these groups’ applications for tax-exempt status. In its report on the “scandal,” the IRS Inspector General’s office wrote, “We also believe that Determinations Unit specialists lacked knowledge of what activities are allowed by” the tax code.

Why Is Obama Charging You For Nuke Plant Costing Higher Energy Bills Than Solar?

beforeitsnews.com - Feb. 23 (News Analysis) - “If nuclear power is such a good idea, why does it need financial help from every U.S. taxpayer?” is a question many Americans and even the Washington Post are asking this week. Even more would ask that question and demand better if they knew the new nuke facility will cost more in energy bills than had the same money funded solar energy. This week, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced Obama’s administration would extend a $6.5 billion federal loan guarantee to cover partial cost of building two new reactors at Southern Co.’s Alvin W. Vogtle site.

This Is Your Brain on Poverty: What Science Tells Us About Poverty

truth-out.org - By Christian Exoo, Calvin F. Exoo - Feb. 23 (Special Report) - Research has only recently been able to identify poverty as a causal factor (rather than merely correlational) in debilitating medical conditions that leave people sick, unable to work and unable to think - all factors that then perpetuate poverty, leaving the poor trapped in a vicious biological cycle. So what can actual science (not Brooks' buzzword-laden version of it) tell us about poverty?
