Why Is Obama Charging You For Nuke Plant Costing Higher Energy Bills Than Solar?

beforeitsnews.com - Feb. 23 (News Analysis) - “If nuclear power is such a good idea, why does it need financial help from every U.S. taxpayer?” is a question many Americans and even the Washington Post are asking this week. Even more would ask that question and demand better if they knew the new nuke facility will cost more in energy bills than had the same money funded solar energy. This week, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced Obama’s administration would extend a $6.5 billion federal loan guarantee to cover partial cost of building two new reactors at Southern Co.’s Alvin W. Vogtle site.

This Is Your Brain on Poverty: What Science Tells Us About Poverty

truth-out.org - By Christian Exoo, Calvin F. Exoo - Feb. 23 (Special Report) - Research has only recently been able to identify poverty as a causal factor (rather than merely correlational) in debilitating medical conditions that leave people sick, unable to work and unable to think - all factors that then perpetuate poverty, leaving the poor trapped in a vicious biological cycle. So what can actual science (not Brooks' buzzword-laden version of it) tell us about poverty?

New Details of Attack on Yemeni Wedding Prompt More Demands Obama Explain Drone Policy

firstlook.org - By Ryan Devereaux - Feb. 22 (Investigative Report) - A new report on the U.S. drone missile strike that killed 12 members of a Yemeni wedding convoy has renewed calls for the Obama administration to make public its own investigations into the incident — and explain how such strikes are consistent with international laws of war. The detailed, 28-page report from Human Rights Watch describes conflicting accounts of the December 12 attack, but nevertheless concludes that some, if not all, of the victims may have been civilians. The laws of war prohibit attacks on civilians that are not discriminate or attacks that cause civilian loss disproportionate to the expected military advantage.

More megatons to megawatts | Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists

thebulletin.org - By Dawn Stover - Feb. 21 (Opinion) - Some experts have argued that even if Moscow were amenable to extending the Megatons to Megawatts program under generous terms, doing so would be wrongheaded because the risks associated with transporting highly enriched uranium to and from Russian processing facilities outweigh the benefits. However, there’s no reason that the United States can’t safely turn more of its own weapons into fuel, a process that would not have to involve large, risky shipments over such long distances.

Venezuelan Protests: Another Attempt By U.S.-Backed Right-Wing Groups To Oust Elected Government?

Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman, Juan Gonzalez - Feb. 20 (News Analysis) - In Venezuela, at least six people have died in recent days during a series of anti-government protests. The latest casualty was a local beauty queen died of a gunshot wound. The protests come less than a year after the death of Hugo Chávez and present the biggest challenge to Venezuela's new president Nicolás Maduro. Earlier this week, right-wing opposition leader Leopoldo López turned himself in to the National Guard after authorities issued a warrant for his arrest last week, accusing him of inciting deadly clashes. On Monday, Maduro ordered the expulsion of three U.S. consular officials while claiming the United States has sided with the opposition. Our guest, George Ciccariello-Maher, looks at the recent history of the U.S. role in Venezuela opposing both the Chávez and Maduro governments. He is author of “We Created Chávez: A People’s History of the Venezuelan Revolution” and teaches political science at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

Here's Why Obama Can't Get Democrats To Back His Trade Deal

Huffington Post - By Ryan Grim, Zach Carter - Feb. 20 (News Analysis) - GOP leaders in Congress support the trade pact, which is still being negotiated. But Democratic opposition is broad in both the House and Senate, making Froman's mission critical if the Obama administration hopes to clear the agreement through Congress when it is finished. And if the reception at the Common Purpose gathering is any indication, a lot more charm will be needed. The liberal coalition was unusually unified -- against the administration.

Trade leak shows U.S.’s weak environmental pitch, groups say

The Politico - By Eric Bradner - Feb. 19 (News) - “Climate change” has gone missing in trade talks between the United States and 11 Pacific Rim countries. Top U.S. trade negotiators appear to be trying to steer their counterparts away from even using the phrase in the massive Trans-Pacific Partnership pact, a leaked summary of the the U.S.’s most recent proposal seems to show. The document indicates that the White House’s rewrite would replace “trade and climate change” as the title of a section with “transition to a low-emissions economy.”

The 4 Most Profound Ways Privatization Perverts Education

AlterNet - By Paul Buchheit - Feb. 18 (News Analysis) - Profit-seeking in the banking and health care industries has victimized Americans. Now it's beginning to happen in education, with our children as the products. There are good reasons - powerful reasons - to stop the privatization efforts before the winner-take-all free market creates a new vehicle for inequality. At the very least we need the good sense to slow it down while we examine the evidence about charters and vouchers.
