New Details of Attack on Yemeni Wedding Prompt More Demands Obama Explain Drone Policy

firstlook.org - By Ryan Devereaux - Feb. 22 (Investigative Report) - A new report on the U.S. drone missile strike that killed 12 members of a Yemeni wedding convoy has renewed calls for the Obama administration to make public its own investigations into the incident — and explain how such strikes are consistent with international laws of war. The detailed, 28-page report from Human Rights Watch describes conflicting accounts of the December 12 attack, but nevertheless concludes that some, if not all, of the victims may have been civilians. The laws of war prohibit attacks on civilians that are not discriminate or attacks that cause civilian loss disproportionate to the expected military advantage.

The NSA's Secret Role in the U.S. Assassination Program

firstlook.org - By Jeremy Scahill, Glenn Greenwald - Feb. 13 (Investigative Report) - The National Security Agency is using complex analysis of electronic surveillance, rather than human intelligence, as the primary method to locate targets for lethal drone strikes – an unreliable tactic that results in the deaths of innocent or unidentified people.

Republican Party wing creates 18 fake websites for Democrats

Los Angeles Times - By Daniel Rothberg - Feb. 10 (News) - The National Republican Congressional Committee bought up hundreds of URLs ahead of the 2014 election cycle and has created nearly 20 websites appearing to support Democratic candidates in all but the small print, a spokesman for the campaign confirmed Thursday. The websites include donation forms that accept credit cards and encourage viewers to contribute up to $500, but instead of money going to the Democratic candidates, it goes to the NRCC.

Walsh How the media created Chris Christie

populist.com - By Joan Walsh - Jan. 30 (News Analysis) - it’s hard not to be shocked anew that Christie was ever considered a leading presidential candidate. It’s also shocking that he coasted to reelection just two months ago, crushing state Sen. Barbara Buono – but the two phenomena are connected. Christie’s strong national reputation convinced local and national Democrats and even liberal media figures to either ignore the New Jersey race or, in some cases, back Christie.

JimHightower.com - By Jim Hightower - Jan. 28 (Special Report) - By holding what are called "destination fundraisers" outside of Washington, lawmakers and lobbyists can spend quality time together as they ski, snorkel, and schmooze. Seniors Paying $7,125 a Month to be Neglected? What Happened When Wall Street Got Involved in Assisted Living

ProPublica - By A.C. Thompson, Jonathan Jones - Jan. 24 (Investigative Report) - Here are a few things the brochure didn’t mention: Just months earlier, Emeritus supervisors had audited the facility’s process for handling medications. It had been found wanting in almost every important regard. And, in truth, those “specially trained” staffers hadn’t actually been trained to care for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, a violation of California law. The facility relied on a single nurse to track the health of its scores of residents, and the few licensed medical professionals who worked there tended not to last long. During the three years prior to Joan’s arrival, Emerald Hills had cycled through three nurses and was now employing its fourth. At least one of those nurses was alarmed by what she saw, telling top Emeritus executives — in writing — that Emerald Hills suffered from “a huge shortage of staff” and was mired in“total dysfunction.”

Military Sexual Assault Reports Jump By 50 Percent

Huffington Post - By Lolita C. Baldor - Dec. 28 (News Report) - The number of reported sexual assaults across the military shot up by more than 50 percent this year, an increase that defense officials say may suggest that victims are becoming more willing to come forward after a tumultuous year of scandals that shined a spotlight on the crimes and put pressure on the military to take aggressive action.

Inside the Fight to Prevent Billions in International Money Laundering and Tax Shelters

AlterNet - By Micael Hudson - Dec. 05 (Special Report) - Britain has vowed to lift the secrecy covering the Cayman Islands and other financial sanctuaries operating under its flag. Dozens of rich nations have agreed — in an unprecedented example of global cooperation on offshore issues — to begin swapping information about assets stashed in foreign accounts. Another French president — François Hollande — has promised to “eradicate” tax havens. “Looks like the offshore party is over,” the Chicago Tribune said recently. Will this time be different? Many financial crime fighters are skeptical.

Jeremy Scahill: the man exposing the US Dirty War

theguardian.com - By Stephen Moss - Nov. 25 (Review) - as the Edward Snowden furore shows, journalists are under greater pressure than ever before. "Under President Obama the US justice department has authorised the seizure of the phone records of journalists; they are tracking the meta-data of journalists; they're prosecuting whistleblowers in record numbers under the Espionage Act; there really is a war against journalism. For everyone who does this kind of work, where you're taking on powerful institutions, the responsible posture to take is to assume they're monitoring your communications. It's a part of doing this work."

16 Mind-Blowing Facts About Who Really Killed JFK

readersupportednews.org - By Carl Gibson - Nov. 22 (Special Report) - , the complex and intricate plot to kill Kennedy was carried out by multiple alphabet agencies, acting on what they believed were righteous motives to remove an obstructionist president in the way of a war they felt had to be waged. But the suggestion that a government agency would covertly kill its own president to advance a cause isn't that radical. Our CIA has been behind the assassinations of world leaders both before and after the Kennedy assassination, from Mohammed Mossadegh in Iran in 1953, to Salvador Allende in Chile in 1973. Just as with JFK's assassination in 1963, our runaway intelligence agencies have repeatedly shown they won't let any elected leader stand in the way of their goals.

JFK Denialism: Why Does Mainstream Media Refuse to Ask the Real Questions About His Death?

Consortium News - By JP Sottile - Nov. 22 (News Analysis) - It is a failure that has metastasized over the five decades since, with those entrenched behind the privileged walls of network news, major newspapers and sanitized pulp-history continually doubling-down on a discredited theory that has them perpetually out of step with the majority of Americans who, not coincidentally, also distrust them.

"Wounds of Waziristan"

Democracy Now - By Madiha Tahir - Nov. 04 (Special Report) - The Pakistani government is warning of a new rift with the United States after a CIA drone strike that killed the head of the Pakistani Taliban. Hakimullah Mehsud and six other militants died on Friday when U.S. missiles hit their vehicle in North Waziristan. Mehsud had a $5 million bounty on his head and was accused of responsibility for thousands of deaths. The attack came just as the Pakistani government had re-launched peace talks with the Taliban. In a broadcast exclusive, we air a documentary that highlights the stories of civilians directly impacted by drone attacks in Pakistan: "Wounds of Waziristan," directed by Madiha Tahir. “Waziristan is only half the size of New Jersey. How would it feel if bombs rained over New Jersey for nine years?,” asks Tahir in the film. “Would you be frightened? If they killed your son, your cousin or your husband and got away with it, would you be angry? You probably couldn’t forget about it if you tried. You’d be haunted.”

Pension Theft Crime Wave

truth-out.org - By Mark Brenner - Oct. 29 (News Report) - The nation’s union-haters have a juicy new target, Detroit’s public employees, ever since the city became the largest in history to file for bankruptcy. Detroit unions will wrangle with a bankruptcy judge this fall over how to handle $3.5 billion in pension obligations for 12,000 retirees. City retirees receive a princely sum of $19,213 per year on average. Pension obligations to these workers account for less than 20 percent of Detroit’s debt. But the facts haven’t kept retirees from bearing the brunt of the bankruptcy fallout.
