Here's Why Obama Can't Get Democrats To Back His Trade Deal

Huffington Post - By Ryan Grim, Zach Carter - Feb. 20 (News Analysis) - GOP leaders in Congress support the trade pact, which is still being negotiated. But Democratic opposition is broad in both the House and Senate, making Froman's mission critical if the Obama administration hopes to clear the agreement through Congress when it is finished. And if the reception at the Common Purpose gathering is any indication, a lot more charm will be needed. The liberal coalition was unusually unified -- against the administration.

What Would President Hillary Do? She'll Be the First Woman President.

rall.com - By Ted Rall - Jan. 30 (News Analysis) - Hillary leads every poll of the Democratic field for 2016. But why? What is it about her that makes some liberal voters swoon? I combed the Internet looking for signs of something approximating a political agenda. I pushed out the following question to social networks: “Support Hillary for 2016? Can you tell me what she would DO?” The closest approximation to an answer came back: “She would be the first woman president.”

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Progressives United and Democracy For America had all pressured Schwartz in December to resign her honorary position at Third Way. At the time, her spokesman said the congresswoman thought that the op-ed was "outrageous and strongly disagree[d] with it."

Blue Dog Blues

readersupportednews.org - By Charles Pierce - Jan. 19 (Opinion) - In danger of losing even more clout, the leading Blue Dogs are regrouping and rebuilding. They are adding four members to their ranks this week - Reps. Ron Barber (Ariz.), Cheri Bustos (Ill.), Nick J. Rahall II (W.Va.) and Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.) - and angling to play a key role in bipartisan talks over the next few years in the belief that the polar tension in the Capitol will thaw. Look, unicorns!

Elizabeth Warren Comes Down Hard Against Keystone XL Pipeline While Hillary Clinton's Allies Push It Ahead

AlterNet - By Eric Zuiesse - Dec. 24 (News Report) - On Friday, December 20, Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren finally separated herself clearly from former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, regarding the issue of climate change and global warming. TransCanada Corporation wants to build the Keystone XL Pipeline to carry oil from Alberta Canada's tar sands to two refineries owned by Koch Industries near the Texas Gulf Coast, for export to Europe. Hillary Clinton has helped to make that happen, while Elizabeth Warren has now taken the opposite side.

Senate Votes For Nuclear Option

Huffington Post - By Ryan Grim, Michael McAuliff - Nov. 21 (News) - From now until the Senate passes a new rule, executive branch nominees and judges nominated for all courts except the Supreme Court will be able to pass off the floor and take their seats on the bench with the approval of a simple majority of senators. They will no longer have to jump the traditional hurdle of 60 votes, which has increasingly proven a barrier to confirmation during the Obama administration. Reid opened debate in the morning by saying that it has become "so, so very obvious" that the Senate is broken and in need of rules reform. He rolled through a series of statistics intended to demonstrate that the level of obstruction under President Barack Obama outpaced any historical precedent.

8 Reasons Democrats Should Refuse a Shutdown “Grand Bargain”

OurFuture.org - By Richard Eskow - Oct. 05 (News Analysis) - White House messaging on the shutdown (and debt ceiling threats) has been nearly pitch-perfect. Republicans, on the other hand, have stumbled and struggled and are paying for it in the polls. Now the GOP’s trying to solve the problem it has created for itself by offering the Administration something they both seem to want: Social Security cuts, and perhaps benefit reductions to Medicare as well.

How the Monsanto Protection Act Snuck Into Law

readersupportednews.org - By Natasha Lennard - Apr. 01 (News Analysis) - lipped into the Agricultural Appropriations Bill, which passed through Congress last week, was a small provision that's a big deal for Monsanto and its opponents. The provision protects genetically modified seeds from litigation in the face of health risks and has thus been dubbed the "Monsanto Protection Act" by activists who oppose the biotech giant. President Barack Obama signed the spending bill, including the provision, into law on Tuesday Since the act's passing, more than 250,000 people have signed a petition opposing the provision and a rally, consisting largely of farmers organized by the Food Democracy Now network, protested outside the White House Wednesday

The PolitiFact guide to Medicare attack lines

PolitiFact - By Angie Drobnic Holan, Louis Jacobson - May. 06 (Fact Check) - Barack Obama has slashed Medicare by $500 billion. Mitt Romney and House Republicans want to end Medicare. And a new board is going to ration care so Washington can waste more money. Believe any of that? You shouldn’t. But it’s what the political ads likely will be saying between now and Election Day in November. We have some advice for voters sorting out the claims: Believe nothing you hear in a 30-second TV ad. Here are a few facts about Medicare: • It’s the government-run health insurance for Americans over age 65. • It’s a Canada-style, single-payer system. Liberals love that; conservatives don’t. • It has approximately 50 million people on its rolls. • That 50 million will grow to 80 million as baby boomers retire. Paying for that will be a challenge. Those realities about Medicare have sparked a full-fledged political brawl for 2012.

Memeorandum Colors 2012: Visualizing Bias on Political Blogs

Wired - By Andy Baio - Apr. 18 (Special Report) - I don’t watch sports, but every four years, I lose myself in the horse race of the U.S. presidential elections. That competition kicked off in earnest Monday, as Gallup started its daily tracking polls for the general election between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney. In 2008, I was hooked on one drug for my daily fix: Memeorandum, a completely automated aggregator that surfaces popular stories from political news sites, often within minutes.
