The 4 Most Profound Ways Privatization Perverts Education

AlterNet - By Paul Buchheit - Feb. 18 (News Analysis) - Profit-seeking in the banking and health care industries has victimized Americans. Now it's beginning to happen in education, with our children as the products. There are good reasons - powerful reasons - to stop the privatization efforts before the winner-take-all free market creates a new vehicle for inequality. At the very least we need the good sense to slow it down while we examine the evidence about charters and vouchers.

The Ugly Truth about Charter Schools: Padded Cells, Corruption, Lousy Instruction and Worse Results

AlterNet - By Jeff Bryant - Jan. 12 (Investigative Report) - So how do you feel when you find out the local school that you pay for with your taxes is operating a scam that diverted millions of dollars through fake Medicaid billing? Or the school used your tax dollars as “grants” to start up other profit-making enterprises ... or pay lavish salaries — $300,000, $400,000 or more — to its administrators ... or support a movement linked to a reclusive Turkish cleric being investigated for bribery and corruption. Welcome to the world of charter schools.

The revenge of the insurance industry

Daily Kos - By rss@dailykos.com (Jon Perr) - Nov. 11 (Opinion) - President Obama on Thursday apologized to Americans whose existing health insurance was being significantly altered or cancelled altogether just as enrollment for the Affordable Care Act was commencing. "I am sorry," the President announced, "that they are finding themselves in this situation based on assurances they got from me." But those Americans waiting for a mea culpa from either their employers or their insurers shouldn't hold their breath. After all, while their premiums and deductibles have spiraled upwards, the percentage of nonelderly Americans covered by workplace insurance has plummeted from almost 70 percent to 54 percent just since 2001. Meanwhile, even as the evidence is growing that some carriers are cynically using the launch of the ACA to squeeze or drop less "desirable" customers, the Obama administration like the Bush White House before it has had to plead with insurers to protect their current policyholders. That shouldn't be too much to ask of an industry forecast by ...

How Schools Have Become Dead Zones of the Imagination

AlterNet - By Henry A. Giroux - Aug. 19 (Opinion) - If the right-wing billionaires and apostles of corporate power have their way, public schools will become “dead zones of the imagination,” reduced to anti-public spaces that wage an assault on critical thinking, civic literacy and historical memory

New Data Shows School 'Reformers' Are Getting it Wrong | Perspectives, What Matters Today

billmoyers.com - By David Sirota - Jun. 11 (News Report) - In the great American debate over education, the education and technology corporations, bankrolled politicians and activist-profiteers who collectively comprise the so-called “reform” movement base their arguments on one central premise: that America should expect public schools to produce world-class academic achievement regardless of the negative forces bearing down on a school’s particular students. In recent days, though, the faults in that premise are being exposed by unavoidable reality.

How the Young Are Indoctrinated to Obey

AlterNet - By Noam Chomsky - Apr. 06 (Opinion) - many measures have been taken to restore discipline. One is the crusade for privatization – placing control in reliable hands. Another is sharp increases in tuition, up nearly 600 percent since 1980. These produce a higher education system with "far more economic stratification than is true of any other country," according to Jane Wellman, former director of the Delta Cost Project, which monitors these issues. Tuition increases trap students into long-term debt and hence subordination to private power.

Chronicle of Higher Education - By Michael J. Bugeja - May. 03 (Opinion) - As we approach the end of another academic term, some institutions are still living off of stimulus money that did little to inspire solutions to mammoth budget cuts looming for the 2012 academic year, which promises to be one of the most difficult in memory for higher education.

On the Ground with a "Gap Year"

New York Times - By Gregory Kristof - May. 03 (Opinion) - When college does roll around, you’ll already have gone through your own freshman orientation. After getting lost in a remote village because I was seeking a familiar temple but was approaching it from a completely different direction, I learned that where you are going is not all that matters. Where you are coming from matters, too.
