Why Is Obama Charging You For Nuke Plant Costing Higher Energy Bills Than Solar?

beforeitsnews.com - Feb. 23 (News Analysis) - “If nuclear power is such a good idea, why does it need financial help from every U.S. taxpayer?” is a question many Americans and even the Washington Post are asking this week. Even more would ask that question and demand better if they knew the new nuke facility will cost more in energy bills than had the same money funded solar energy. This week, Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz announced Obama’s administration would extend a $6.5 billion federal loan guarantee to cover partial cost of building two new reactors at Southern Co.’s Alvin W. Vogtle site.

Obama's Weak Enviro Agenda Is Suicide for Humanity -- Here's the Stark Ecological Future We Face

AlterNet - By Tara Lohan - Jan. 31 (News Analysis) - Are there any self-respecting environmental organizations out there that are still behind President Obama? After his State of the Union on Tuesday it's hard to imagine there could be. In his address, Obama proudly declared, "The 'all the above' energy strategy I announced a few years ago is working, and today America is closer to energy independence than we have been in decades."

2013 In Review: Obama Talks Climate Change–But Pushes Fracking

Mother Jones - By Suzanne Goldenberg - Dec. 26 (Special Report) - This was the year when climate change came out of the closet. Barack Obama elevated climate change to one of his top presidential priorities. White House and other officials brought up the topic in public after spending the previous four years scuttling away from any mention of climate change. Climate change became a factor in state elections and there were polls suggesting even Republicans in the most conservative states wanted to take measures to avoid a future of dangerous climate change. But it was also a year when Obama claimed as a personal achievement the expansion of oil and gas production through hydraulic fracturing, and when the coal industry sent coal overseas to rescue the mines closing down at home. Barack Obama used the January 21 inaugural address for his second term in the White House to renew his commitment to respond to the climate crisis "knowing that ...

Find a permanent solution for Hanford nuclear waste

seattletimes.com - By Tom Carpenter - Dec. 24 (Opinion) - We are at a crisis with Hanford’s tank waste. Last year, the U.S. Department of Energy officially confirmed that the first of its double-shelled tanks, Tank AY-102, had failed. We have been relying on those tanks to take on waste from the failed single-shelled tanks. Hanford is now out of room in the double-shell tanks, meaning this waste has no place to go when it leaks, except into the river.

Could Big Batteries Be Big Business In California?

All Things Considered - Dec. 23 (Special Report) - Unless the erratic bursts of energy generated on a windy or sunny day can be stored and later measured out in an even way, these renewable sources of power can't be counted on to stabilize the electrical grid. Several battery-making startups hope to help — and reduce electric bills.

Homeless Girl in the Shadows

New York Times - By By ANDREA ELLIOTT - Dec. 09 (Special Report) - She wakes to the sound of breathing. The smaller children lie tangled beside her, their chests rising and falling under winter coats and wool blankets. A few feet away, their mother and father sleep near the mop bucket they use as a toilet. Two other children share a mattress by the rotting wall where the mice live, opposite the baby, whose crib is warmed by a hair dryer perched on a milk crate.
