Rivera noted that O’Reilly referred to Obama as a “community organizer”and added, “[O’Reilly] is the president of most of the white men in America and Barack Obama’s the president of everybody else.”

A Lot Of Media Outlets Botched The CBO's Obamacare Report

Huffington Post - By Jack Mirkinson - Feb. 06 (News Analysis) - The Congressional Budget Office issued a report on Tuesday that said that as many as 2 million people could exit the workforce thanks to the Affordable Care Act. The reasons for this, the CBO said, were varied, but it stressed that the economy would see "a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than...a net drop in businesses’ demand for labor," thanks to, for instance, people choosing to quit jobs they didn't like but were only staying in because of their health care benefits. That's not how a lot of media outlets reported the news, however. A lot of them said that the report was warning that Obamacare would kill over 2 million jobs—a notion at odd's with the CBO's conclusion that some workers would choose not to work.

Walsh How the media created Chris Christie

populist.com - By Joan Walsh - Jan. 30 (News Analysis) - it’s hard not to be shocked anew that Christie was ever considered a leading presidential candidate. It’s also shocking that he coasted to reelection just two months ago, crushing state Sen. Barbara Buono – but the two phenomena are connected. Christie’s strong national reputation convinced local and national Democrats and even liberal media figures to either ignore the New Jersey race or, in some cases, back Christie.

According to Russia Today, he denounced journalists in the United States and Britain, accusing them of failing to challenge those in political power and of discrediting anyone who dared to do so.

How Bad is the Corporate and Conservative Media?

AlterNet - By Don Hazen - Dec. 21 (Editorial) - Actually both corporate and right-wing press are getting much worse. There are dozens of examples of journalistic failure every week. The right-wing media is often insane as we report on AlterNet in our super popular weekly series on Right-wing wackos. And, increasingly, mainstream media is about protecting the 1% and the media owner’s financial interests. They too often miss the real story or mislead the reader. We need top flight, tenacious, fearless, progressive media to push back every day.

JFK Denialism: Why Does Mainstream Media Refuse to Ask the Real Questions About His Death?

Consortium News - By JP Sottile - Nov. 22 (News Analysis) - It is a failure that has metastasized over the five decades since, with those entrenched behind the privileged walls of network news, major newspapers and sanitized pulp-history continually doubling-down on a discredited theory that has them perpetually out of step with the majority of Americans who, not coincidentally, also distrust them.

How Can the New York Times Endorse an Agreement the Public Can't Read?

eff.org - By Maira Sutton - Nov. 08 (News Analysis) - The New York Times' editorial board has made a disappointing endorsement of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), even as the actual text of the agreement remains secret. That raises two distressing possibilities: either in an act of extraordinary subservience, the Times has endorsed an agreement that neither the public nor its editors have the ability to read. Or, in an act of extraordinary cowardice, it has obtained a copy of the secret text and hasn't yet fulfilled its duty to the public interest to publish it.

Media Framing of Candidates

facebook.com - By Robert Reich - - Nov. 07 (Opinion) - Always listen for the day-after adjectives, which give a clue as to how candidates and issues will be framed in the future. In talking about Chris Christie's win in New Jersey, the Washington Post writes of "pragmatic, as opposed to ideological, governance." But in describing Bill de Blasio, the media uses the adjectives "left" or "left-leaning." In an era when almost all economic gains are going to the very top, when poverty is increasing, and when median household incomes are dropping even with two wage earners, to be in favor of raising taxes on the wealthy and providing better schools to everyone else should not be considered "left." I'd call this pragmatic.

Goodbye Free Press? As Europe Erupts Over US Spying, NSA Chief Says Government Must Stop the Media

The Guardian - By Glenn Greenwald - Oct. 28 (News Analysis) - The most under-discussed aspect of the NSA story has long been its international scope. That all changed this week as both Germany and France exploded with anger over new revelations about pervasive NSA surveillance on their population and democratically elected leaders.

Why Won't The Press Police Radical Republicans?

Media Matters - By Eric Boehlert - Oct. 12 (News Analysis) - News coverage of the government shutdown and the looming debt ceiling crisis has prompted widespread criticism about how Beltway journalists unnecessarily include Democrats when assigning blame for a shutdown strategy that has been methodically plotted by extremist Republicans for months; a strategy built around making unprecedented demands on the president in exchange for Republican votes for a policy they say they already support.

Someone Had This Crazy Notion That Maybe The Media Should Inform The Public About Stuff

Huffington Post - By Jason Linkins - Oct. 10 (Opinion) - Leaving aside the fact that it's weird to suggest that one spend "political capital" on a matter such as the debt ceiling, which is neither a partisan issue nor a subject for debate, why is it solely President Barack Obama's responsibility? Chuck Todd and David Gregory may not have been aware of this, but as they were discussing this matter there were TV cameras pointed at them, beaming their image all over the world into people's homes. This presented a golden opportunity to fulfill their obligation to properly inform the public. So why not do it? For whatever reason, Todd and Gregory passed on the chance, and in so doing they allowed error to flourish.

90% of Top Newspaper Headlines Censor Islam in Nairobi, Pakistan Attacks | Media Research Center

mrc.org - Sep. 25 (Research) - Dare a top newspaper journalist to play connect-the-dots and chances are he’ll fail miserably – at least with drawing the line between Islam and terrorism. In Nairobi, Kenya last weekend, Islamist militants took over a high-end shopping mall and began executing non-Muslims. In Pakistan, Islamist suicide bombers detonated at a Christian Church on Sunday. Yet on Monday, September 23, 90 percent of the top ten (via circulation numbers) daily newspapers’ headlines in the United States censored the words “Islam” and Muslim” from Nairobi and Pakistan reports. One – the New York Daily News – didn’t even have a headline for the latest Islamic terrorist attacks. That’s journalism at its finest.
