Insurers now outspending Kochs’ group on Obamacare ads

Washington Post - By Sandhya Somashekhar - Feb. 12 (News) - Much has been made about Americans for Prosperity's prodigious spending on an ad campaign opposed to the new health-care law. But another player, which is casting the program in a different light, is giving the conservative advocacy group a run for its money: the health insurance industry. Companies such as Cigna and Kaiser Permanente poured about $40 million into television ads specifically related to Obamacare between Dec. 1 and Feb. 8, according to ad tracking firm Kantar Media. That is far more than AFP, which as of last week had dropped about $27 million on ads since August attacking politicians who supported the program.

U.S. Plunges in Global Press Freedom Rankings As Obama Wages "War on Whistleblowers"

Democracy Now - By Amy Goodman, NERMEEN SHAIKH - Feb. 12 (News Report) - A new survey of press freedom around the world that finds the United States has plunged 13 spots, now ranking just 46th among 180 countries. The annual survey by Reporters Without Borders also says Syria is the most dangerous country for journalists, showing a correlation between conflict zones and a low level of press freedom. Other countries that fell lower than in the previous year’s survey, include the civil-war-torn Central African Republic, down 43 spots to 109, and Guatemala, where four journalists were killed last year alone. This comes as the United Nations General Assembly recently adopted its first resolution on the safety of journalists. The group has now called on the United Nations to monitor how member states meet their obligations to protect reporters. We are joined by Delphine Halgand of Reporters Without Borders.

Republican Party wing creates 18 fake websites for Democrats

Los Angeles Times - By Daniel Rothberg - Feb. 10 (News) - The National Republican Congressional Committee bought up hundreds of URLs ahead of the 2014 election cycle and has created nearly 20 websites appearing to support Democratic candidates in all but the small print, a spokesman for the campaign confirmed Thursday. The websites include donation forms that accept credit cards and encourage viewers to contribute up to $500, but instead of money going to the Democratic candidates, it goes to the NRCC.

Walsh How the media created Chris Christie

populist.com - By Joan Walsh - Jan. 30 (News Analysis) - it’s hard not to be shocked anew that Christie was ever considered a leading presidential candidate. It’s also shocking that he coasted to reelection just two months ago, crushing state Sen. Barbara Buono – but the two phenomena are connected. Christie’s strong national reputation convinced local and national Democrats and even liberal media figures to either ignore the New Jersey race or, in some cases, back Christie.

TPP Creates Legal Incentives For ISPs To Police The Internet. What Is At Risk? Your Rights.

eff.org - By Kurt Opsahl, Carolina Rossini - Jan. 29 (News Analysis) - Service providers are the conduits of free expression. By enabling free or low-cost platforms that enable anyone to reach an audience of millions, ISPs have democratized media and enabled innovative ideas to spread quickly—without the gatekeepers of traditional media. Private ISP enforcement of copyright poses a serious threat to free speech on the Internet, because it makes offering open platforms for user-generated content economically untenable

Number of Black-Owned TV Stations Plummets to... Zero

AlterNet - By Joseph Torres, S. Derek Turner - Dec. 30 (News Report) - This sorry state of affairs is the culmination of a trend that started in the late 1990s when Congress and the Federal Communications Commission allowed massive consolidation in the broadcasting industry. This policy shift crowded out existing owners of color and ensured that it would be nearly impossible for new owners to access the public airwaves. Recent FCC actions (and in some cases, inaction) have only hastened this decline in opportunities for diverse broadcasters.

U.S., British Media Are 'Devoted Servants' To Government

Huffington Post - By Katherine Fung, Glenn Greenwald - Dec. 28 (Opinion) - Greenwald, who reported on the National Security Agency's secret domestic surveillance programs with the help of documents leaked by the former NSA contractor, spoke to the Chaos Communication Congress in Hamburg, Germany, via satellite from Brazil. According to Russia Today, he denounced journalists in the United States and Britain, accusing them of failing to challenge those in political power and of discrediting anyone who dared to do so.

On Sarah Palin's Impressively Incoherent 'Duck Dynasty' Comments

Rolling Stone - By Matt Taibbi - Dec. 23 (News Analysis) - Palin's mind is amazing. Slavery was purely a private-enterprise abomination. It had nothing to do with being subservient to the government. It was the opposite of that, actually. She was also wrong in the sense that the health care program isn't "free stuff" (even those who will receive subsidized care will be paying in one form or another for their policies). So she pulled off a Friedman-esque anatomical impossibility there, getting three feet in her mouth at the same time.

Is there $200 billion in duplicative federal spending?

Washington Post - By Glenn Kessler - Dec. 12 (Fact Check) - “I’m real disappointed in the [budget] deal. The GAO says we’ve got $200 billion in wasteful, duplicate spending every year. And what we do is we raise fees, raise money, steal money, raise the cost of pensions for federal workers.” –Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Dec. 11, 2013 In expressing his […]

Stop Thanking the Troops for Me: No, They Don’t Protect Our Freedoms!”

AlterNet - By Justin Doolittle - Nov. 12 (Opinion) - Not all of the “NBA Cares” promos are about serving the least fortunate members of our society, though. The league is determined to show its commitment to both ends of the spectrum of power. In one spot, NBA stars can be seen, not playing board games with children devastated by cancer, but, instead, touting the greatness and indispensability of the most powerful institution in the world, the United States military.

Media Framing of Candidates

facebook.com - By Robert Reich - - Nov. 07 (Opinion) - Always listen for the day-after adjectives, which give a clue as to how candidates and issues will be framed in the future. In talking about Chris Christie's win in New Jersey, the Washington Post writes of "pragmatic, as opposed to ideological, governance." But in describing Bill de Blasio, the media uses the adjectives "left" or "left-leaning." In an era when almost all economic gains are going to the very top, when poverty is increasing, and when median household incomes are dropping even with two wage earners, to be in favor of raising taxes on the wealthy and providing better schools to everyone else should not be considered "left." I'd call this pragmatic.

Goodbye Free Press? As Europe Erupts Over US Spying, NSA Chief Says Government Must Stop the Media

The Guardian - By Glenn Greenwald - Oct. 28 (News Analysis) - The most under-discussed aspect of the NSA story has long been its international scope. That all changed this week as both Germany and France exploded with anger over new revelations about pervasive NSA surveillance on their population and democratically elected leaders.
