Number of Black-Owned TV Stations Plummets to... Zero

AlterNet - By Joseph Torres, S. Derek Turner - Dec. 30 (News Report) - This sorry state of affairs is the culmination of a trend that started in the late 1990s when Congress and the Federal Communications Commission allowed massive consolidation in the broadcasting industry. This policy shift crowded out existing owners of color and ensured that it would be nearly impossible for new owners to access the public airwaves. Recent FCC actions (and in some cases, inaction) have only hastened this decline in opportunities for diverse broadcasters.

The Patchwork Nation

New York Times - By Adewale Maja Pearce - Dec. 26 (Opinion) - In 2005, the National Intelligence Council, an independent group that advises Washington’s director of central intelligence, published a report that raised the specter of “the outright collapse of Nigeria.” It echoed an earlier council report on global trends through 2015 that was pessimistic about the future of the so-called giant of Africa.

Top Democratic Pollster Says Don't Mess with Social Security -- Or Else Face the Wrath of Voters in 2014

AlterNet - By Steven Rosenfeld - Nov. 13 (Special Report) - America faces a retirement security crisis of almost unimaginable proportions. In a Capital Hill briefing last week, experts described how more than half of the 77 million baby boomers heading toward their mid-60s and older—especially women and people of color—have literally no retirement savings, and will fall into poverty as they age. The figure put on the so-called retirement deficit, or what it would take to keep people at their current living standards, was estimated to be between $12-$14 trillion

White men have much to discuss about mass shootings

Washington Post - By Charlotte Childress, Harriet Childress - Mar. 30 (Opinion) - Imagine if African American men and boys were committing mass shootings month after month, year after year. Articles and interviews would flood the media, and we’d have political debates demanding that African Americans be “held accountable.” Then, if an atrocity such as the Newtown, Conn., shootings took place and African American male leaders held a news conference to offer solutions, their credibility would be questionable. The public would tell these leaders that they need to focus on problems in their own culture and communities. ...

"News For All The People": Juan González & Joseph Torres On the Epic Story of Race & the U.S. Media

Democracy Now - By Juan Gonzalez, Joseph Torres - Oct. 13 (News Analysis) - which serves democracy best?" González says. "It turns out that in those periods of time when the government has opted for a decentralized or autonomous system, democracy has had a better opportunity to flourish, racial minorities have been able to be heard more often and to establish their own press. In those periods of the nation’s history when policies have fostered centralized news and information, that’s when dissident voices, racial minorities, marginalized groups in society are excluded from the media system."
