Big Food Company Recalls Almost Nine Million Pounds of Beef That Were Never Inspected

readersupportednews.org - By Sy Mukherjee - Feb. 12 (News Report) - food safety inspections are stymied by a significant lack of funding and insufficient staff. Although President Obama signed the largest overhaul of America's food safety regimen in 70 years into law in 2010, officials are concerned that the planned changes won't become a reality without more appropriations.

Republican Party wing creates 18 fake websites for Democrats

Los Angeles Times - By Daniel Rothberg - Feb. 10 (News) - The National Republican Congressional Committee bought up hundreds of URLs ahead of the 2014 election cycle and has created nearly 20 websites appearing to support Democratic candidates in all but the small print, a spokesman for the campaign confirmed Thursday. The websites include donation forms that accept credit cards and encourage viewers to contribute up to $500, but instead of money going to the Democratic candidates, it goes to the NRCC.

Republicans Still Find Ways To Stall Judicial Nominees Despite Filibuster Reform

Huffington Post - By Jennifer Bendery - Feb. 09 (News Report) - Senate Democrats made it a lot easier for President Barack Obama to get his judicial nominees confirmed when they nixed the filibuster against most nominees last fall -- a move that came in response to Republicans using the filibuster to block many of Obama's picks for political reasons. But so far, removing that procedural hurdle hasn't changed much in the Senate, where there hasn't been a single vote on a district court nominee since December.

Walsh How the media created Chris Christie

populist.com - By Joan Walsh - Jan. 30 (News Analysis) - it’s hard not to be shocked anew that Christie was ever considered a leading presidential candidate. It’s also shocking that he coasted to reelection just two months ago, crushing state Sen. Barbara Buono – but the two phenomena are connected. Christie’s strong national reputation convinced local and national Democrats and even liberal media figures to either ignore the New Jersey race or, in some cases, back Christie.

Map: Publically Funded Schools That Teach Creationism

Slate - By Chris Kirk - Jan. 27 (News Report) - A large, publicly funded charter school system in Texas is teaching creationism to its students, Zack Kopplin recently reported in Slate. Creationist teachers don’t even need to be sneaky about it—the Texas state science education standards, as well as recent laws in Louisiana and Tennessee, permit public school teachers to teach “alternatives” to evolution. Meanwhile, in Florida, Indiana, Ohio, Arizona, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere, taxpayer money is funding creationist private schools through state tuition voucher or scholarship programs. As the map below illustrates, creationism in schools isn’t restricted to schoolhouses in remote villages where the separation of church and state is considered less sacred. If you live in any of these states, there’s a good chance your tax money is helping to convince some hapless students that evolution (the basis of all modern biological science, supported by everything we know about geology, genetics, paleontology, and other fields) is some sort of highly contested scientific hypothesis as credible as “God did it.”

Republicans believe rich people just work harder. So how do they explain these statistics?

Daily Kos - By Laura Clawson - Jan. 25 (Opinion) - Rich people are rich because they worked harder, my ass. This is a convenient belief if you're wealthy, but in the vast majority of cases, reality it is not. And on that mistaken—and often self-interested—belief rests a long list of Republican policy positions that are increasing inequality and poverty, year by year by year.

Why Is the IRS Fighting Efforts to Unmask Karl Rove and U.S. Chamber Political Money Laundering?

AlterNet - By Steven Rosenfeld - Jan. 02 (News Report) - An IRS whistleblower lawsuit that attempts to finger an overseas non-profit affiliated with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as a dark money conduit that put tens of millions into Karl Rove’s hands during the 2010 elections may soon die in an obscure federal court—unless the judge allows evidence-gathering over the IRS’s objections.
