Why Expanding Social Security Is Crucial to Addressing Inequality in America in 2014

AlterNet - By Steve Rosenfeld - Jan. 09 (News Analysis) - In coming decades, America will face an economic crisis of epic proportions as tens of millions of citizens lean toward poverty as they reach their senior years. What is done about it will define what kind of country the U.S. will become.

Elizabeth Warren: It's the Right of Every American to Retire with Dignity -- Why We Must Expand Social Security

AlterNet - By Elizabeth Warren - Dec. 30 (Opinion) - secure retirement is slowly slipping away. Families haven't been able to save as much as they used to, and only 18 percent of private-sector workers have defined benefit pensions today compared with 35 percent two decades ago. Forty-four million workers have no workplace retirement savings plan. With less savings and weaker private retirement protection, retirees depend more than ever on the safety and reliability of Social Security. Social Security also protects retirees' spouses and children, disabled workers, and family members who survive the death of the family's earner.

Top Democratic Pollster Says Don't Mess with Social Security -- Or Else Face the Wrath of Voters in 2014

AlterNet - By Steven Rosenfeld - Nov. 13 (Special Report) - America faces a retirement security crisis of almost unimaginable proportions. In a Capital Hill briefing last week, experts described how more than half of the 77 million baby boomers heading toward their mid-60s and older—especially women and people of color—have literally no retirement savings, and will fall into poverty as they age. The figure put on the so-called retirement deficit, or what it would take to keep people at their current living standards, was estimated to be between $12-$14 trillion

Pension Theft Crime Wave

truth-out.org - By Mark Brenner - Oct. 29 (News Report) - The nation’s union-haters have a juicy new target, Detroit’s public employees, ever since the city became the largest in history to file for bankruptcy. Detroit unions will wrangle with a bankruptcy judge this fall over how to handle $3.5 billion in pension obligations for 12,000 retirees. City retirees receive a princely sum of $19,213 per year on average. Pension obligations to these workers account for less than 20 percent of Detroit’s debt. But the facts haven’t kept retirees from bearing the brunt of the bankruptcy fallout.

5 Reasons Why Cutting Social Security Would Be Irrational

AlterNet - By Paul Buchheit - Oct. 28 (Opinion) - Even for Congress. They, and others who apparently don't study the facts, believe that Social Security is a government handout. But 'entitlement' means that people who have paid into a program all their lives are entitled to a reasonable return on their investment. A better definition, as pointed out by Mark Karlin at Truthout, is a "mandated retirement savings plan."

Sell-Out Alert: 9 Democrats Already Caving to GOP On Social Security Cuts

AlterNet - By Steven Rosenfeld - Oct. 24 (News Analysis) - a majority of Americans don’t want Social Security, Medicare and Medicare cut at all. Why don’t we have one political party represent what a majority of people want?”

What Are Democrats in the Senate Smoking? Caving into Right-Wingers to Cut Medicare Would Be Political Disaster

AlterNet - By RJ Eskow - Oct. 23 (News Analysis) - There are only a few ways this could play out, and most of them involve cuts to Medicare and Social Security. The ones which don't probably involve either A) catastrophic gridlock or B) a mobilized citizenry. Your personal level of optimism probably correlates closely to whether you think A or B is more likely.

Inside the Conservative Brain: Why Tea Partiers Are Desperately Afraid

AlterNet - By Lynn Stuart Parramore - Oct. 21 (News Analysis) - As an illustration, powell looks at how Tea Partiers feel about Social Security, which is coming under vigorous attack just as default has been avoided. When asked individually, powell finds that the Tea Partier likes the program a lot. But she only likes it for her own group — for people who have, in her view, “worked for it.” She doesn’t want the Others to have it because she doesn’t want to be connected to “Them.” “They” don’t work the way she does. “They” don’t care about America as she does. “They” don’t belong in America. This divide between the small group and the larger community can be leveraged by politicians who wish to sway them.

AlterNet - By Alex Kane - Oct. 21 (News Report) - “No politician … I don’t care the political party … will get away with cutting Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid benefits. The Great Sucker Play

readersupportednews.org - By Charles Pierce - Oct. 07 (News Analysis) - At this point, with the whole obsessive-compulsive fascination with the Affordable Care Act having waned somewhat, the Republicans are deeply confused as to why they are doing what they are doing to the country. (In this case, I am speaking of those Republicans who can still reach sanity without asking for the area code. The rump faction that's driving the party, of course, has no doubt of what it's doing at all. It believes it's forming up at Stirling Bridge against the forces of Edward Longshanks.) And, at the same time, even if they don't realize it, they're winning.

8 Reasons Democrats Should Refuse a Shutdown “Grand Bargain”

OurFuture.org - By Richard Eskow - Oct. 05 (News Analysis) - White House messaging on the shutdown (and debt ceiling threats) has been nearly pitch-perfect. Republicans, on the other hand, have stumbled and struggled and are paying for it in the polls. Now the GOP’s trying to solve the problem it has created for itself by offering the Administration something they both seem to want: Social Security cuts, and perhaps benefit reductions to Medicare as well.

Plutocrats' New Pitch: Let Us Rob You Now So You Can Plan Ahead for Poverty

AlterNet - By Lynn Stuart Parramore - Aug. 24 (Opinion) - Hedge fund billionaire Pete Peterson, the budget buffoons Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson, and the rest of their merry band of hustlers over at the hilariously named Committee for a Responsible Budget have asked me to consider their latest proposal. So I thought I’d oblige them, what the heck. Judging from the shrill headline in their mailing, these men (and a token woman or two) wish to sell me on the idea of “Social Security Reform and the Cost of Delay.”

7 Chilling Facts About Retirement in America That Should Make Obama Tremble Before Cutting Social Security and Medicare

AlterNet - By Lynn Stuart Parramore - Apr. 09 (Opinion) - We are headed for a catastrophic retirement train wreck. A Wall Street-driven financial crisis has stripped millions of people of things like jobs, pensions and home equity that were supposed to deliver a dignified retirement after a lifetime of hard work. The crisis has also provided certain interests the opportunity to make false claims about the “unaffordability” of vital social insurance programs like Social Security and Medicare that help the 99% make it. These opportunistic “ Raiders of Your Lost Retirement” do not give a hoot if you starve in your golden years – this is about money to them

America Is Ruled by Billionaires, and They Are Coming After the Last Shreds of Our Democracy

AlterNet - By Michael Brenner - Apr. 06 (Special Report) - The United States today qualifies as a plutocracy – on a number of grounds. Let’s look at some striking bits of evidence. Gross income redistribution upwards in the hierarchy has been a feature of American society for the past decades. The familiar statistics tell us that nearly 80% of the national wealth generated since 1973 has gone to the upper 2%, 65% to the upper 1 per cent. Estimates as to the rise in real income for salaried workers over the past 40 years range from 20% to 28 %. In that period, real GDP has risen by 110% – it has more than doubled.

Senate Unanimously Votes Against Cuts to Social Security: Media Don’t Notice

nationofchange.org - By Dean Baker - Mar. 26 (News Analysis) - There are few areas where the corruption of the national media is more apparent than in its treatment of Social Security. Most of the elite media have made it clear in both their opinion and news pages that they want to see benefits cut. In keeping with this position they highlight the views of political figures who push cuts to the program, treating them as responsible, while those who oppose cuts are ignored or mocked.
