On Sarah Palin's Impressively Incoherent 'Duck Dynasty' Comments

Rolling Stone - By Matt Taibbi - Dec. 23 (News Analysis) - Palin's mind is amazing. Slavery was purely a private-enterprise abomination. It had nothing to do with being subservient to the government. It was the opposite of that, actually. She was also wrong in the sense that the health care program isn't "free stuff" (even those who will receive subsidized care will be paying in one form or another for their policies). So she pulled off a Friedman-esque anatomical impossibility there, getting three feet in her mouth at the same time.

In Alabama election, a showdown between the GOP establishment and the tea party

Washington Post - By Sean Sullivan - Nov. 05 (News Analysis) - ROBERTSDALE, Ala. — The long-running battle for the heart and soul of the national Republican Party will play out here on Tuesday in the form of a nasty little House special-election primary, pitting business-oriented establishment Republicans against angry and energized tea party insurgents who have become a dominant voice in the GOP. ...

Republican Ken Cuccinelli, running hard, has been hobbled in race for Virginia governor

Washington Post - By Marc Fisher, Laura Vozzella - Nov. 03 (News Analysis) - Some of the biggest names in his party sat out the race or even switched sides. The governor he depended on to rally the troops disappeared into a fog of scandal. Many of the money men who had provided oomph in past elections vanished. Given the obstacles Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II has faced this year — some beyond his control, some of his own making — the surprise in Tuesday’s vote for governor may be that the Republican candidate has kept the race as close as he has.

Three Extreme Right-Wing Ideologies Have Taken Over the Republican Party -- and Could Destroy It Forever

AlterNet - By Lawrence Davidson - Oct. 23 (News Analysis) - As an indication of just how isolating and distorting ideology can be, focus groups of conservative Republicans have revealed a deeply held conspiracy theory. According to researchers who conducted this study, “What drives the Republican base . . . [is] a genuine belief that Obama has a secret agenda to drive the country in a socialist direction.” They also believe that he is the head of a cabal, that he seems to be a politician who “came from nowhere,” and that he is “propelled by some secret forces.” The focus groups revealed this belief to be held by “two out of every three self identified Republicans.”

If Only the Tea Party Crowd Knew Where Their Ideas Came from

AlterNet - By Ira Chernu - Oct. 23 (News Analysis) - the Jeffersonians and Hamiltonians divided over basically the same issue that plagues us now: How much of a role should government play in people's lives? (Though the clash back then was so fierce, and split American society so sharply, that it makes today's politics look rather mild by comparison.) But Wood takes us deeper into the substance of the issue. Jeffersonians were willing to limit government only because they assumed that there was "a principle of benevolence ... a moral instinct, a sense of sympathy, in each human being."

Inside the Conservative Brain: Why Tea Partiers Are Desperately Afraid

AlterNet - By Lynn Stuart Parramore - Oct. 21 (News Analysis) - As an illustration, powell looks at how Tea Partiers feel about Social Security, which is coming under vigorous attack just as default has been avoided. When asked individually, powell finds that the Tea Partier likes the program a lot. But she only likes it for her own group — for people who have, in her view, “worked for it.” She doesn’t want the Others to have it because she doesn’t want to be connected to “Them.” “They” don’t work the way she does. “They” don’t care about America as she does. “They” don’t belong in America. This divide between the small group and the larger community can be leveraged by politicians who wish to sway them.

How Christian Delusions Are Driving the GOP Insane

AlterNet - By Amanda Marcotte - Oct. 11 (News Analysis) - The press often talks about the Tea Party like they’re secularist movement that is interested mainly in promoting “fiscal conservatism”, a vague notion that never actually seems to make good on the promise to save taxpayer money. The reality is much different: The Tea Party is actually driven primarily by fundamentalist Christians whose penchant for magical thinking and belief that they’re being guided by divine forces makes it tough for them to see the real world as it is.

The Koch Brothers’ Samson Option

Consortium News - By Robert Parry - Oct. 09 (News Analysis) - The fiscal crisis in Washington is not simply a threat to economic and government stability, as serious as that is. It is a premeditated scheme to carve out a new constitutional structure that gives the Koch Brothers and other right-wing billionaires the power to void the democratic process

Shutdown shines spotlight on rift in Republican Party

Washington Post - By Dan Balz - Oct. 08 (News Analysis) - One week into the first federal government shutdown since 1996, the Republican Party remains hostage to an unrealistic strategy aimed at an unattainable goal — defunding the nation’s health-care law — that had no obvious path to success. ...

The Triumph of the Ratfuckers

readersupportednews.org - By Charles Pierce - Oct. 07 (News Analysis) - As the Reign Of The Morons enters its third day, let us pause for a moment to pay tribute to a political visionary whose entire career presaged the current moment, anticipating the essential dynamic in play in Washington right now in all of its petulant, kindergartenish glory. Let us raise a morning glass to Donald Segretti, the ratfucker. (As any student of Watergate knows, "ratfucking" was the word used by Segretti and a number of other officials in the Nixon White House for the dirty tricks they ran in student elections when they all were at the University of Southern California

On the Sabotage of Democracy

billmoyers.com - By Bill Moyers - Oct. 07 (Opinion) - “When the president refused to buckle to this extortion, they threw their tantrum,” Bill says. “Like the die-hards of the racist South a century and a half ago, who would destroy the union before giving up their slaves, so would these people burn down the place, sink the ship.” He goes on to tell us where the “reckless ambition” of the Republicans could lead us.

The Great Sucker Play

readersupportednews.org - By Charles Pierce - Oct. 07 (News Analysis) - At this point, with the whole obsessive-compulsive fascination with the Affordable Care Act having waned somewhat, the Republicans are deeply confused as to why they are doing what they are doing to the country. (In this case, I am speaking of those Republicans who can still reach sanity without asking for the area code. The rump faction that's driving the party, of course, has no doubt of what it's doing at all. It believes it's forming up at Stirling Bridge against the forces of Edward Longshanks.) And, at the same time, even if they don't realize it, they're winning.

A Federal Budget Crisis Months in the Planning

New York Times - By Sheryl Gay Stolberg, Mike McIntire - Oct. 06 (News Report) - Out of that session, held one morning in a location the members insist on keeping secret, came a little-noticed “blueprint to defunding Obamacare,” signed by Mr. Meese and leaders of more than three dozen conservative groups. It articulated a take-no-prisoners legislative strategy that had long percolated in conservative circles: that Republicans could derail the health care overhaul if conservative lawmakers were willing to push fellow Republicans — including their cautious leaders — into cutting off financing for the entire federal government.

Evolving Tea Party movement wades into 2014 elections

Fox News - Aug. 04 (News Analysis) - This wasn't the revolution the Tea Party had in mind. Four years ago, the movement and its potent mix of anger and populism persuaded thousands of costumed and sign-waving conservatives to protest the ballooning deficit and President Obama's health care
